We wrote letters and sent them in the mail.

I used a typewriter! IBM Selectric. It couldn’t do any fancy shmancy stuff like kerned fonts or superscript. If you wanted to do superscript you had to manually turn the platen a half-return, and it didn’t diminish the size of the type. There was also only one type face, unless you used those little golf-ball font caps which were super expensive.

Random note of trivia: The Selectric was the typewriter model claimed to have written the Throbbing Memotm.
