Yeah, this was my thought, If you want to make it a humanitarian argument for it, that is all well and good, but if someone is old or disabled and have been in prison for a while they are probably going to be using medicare/medicaid, foodstamps, public or subsidized housing. Certainly won’t save any money unless there is someone taking responsibility for them on the outside.

There’s also housing to consider. Someone released from prison because they’re old and need medical services is going to find it impossible to find affordable housing. They’d have to be released into some kind of a group home setting.

Just throwing them out on the streets is what Reagan did to psychiatric patients while he was president. He just closed the hospitals and tossed them out without providing any funding for outpatient care, leaving local governments to do the damage control.
