Think about all the trouble that Britain has gone through over the lack of a viable male heir…

Three of the most impressive and competent reigning British monarchs in the past six hundred years have been women — Elizabeth 1, Victoria and Elizabeth 2. Male heirs are nice to have around but not essential (the mess Liz 1 left behind her only made it clear that some acknowledged heir is better than none). The rules have changed recently and female heirs now have the same ranking as male heirs, and Catholics can also now assume the throne although the Fid. Def. part of the job could be problematic as the monarch is also titular head of the Anglican Church. I don’t think anyone’s considered a transgender heir but it’s probably not that much of a problem if it did occur.
