I really liked it, also. I was 40 at the time. : ) The ultimate submarine movie, and a very moving and horrific portrait of humanity on a mission not of their own choosing, but “following orders”. Yes, the “enemy” has the same desires, concerns, cares, love, that the rest of us have while at the same time intent on our destruction and saving themselves. War really is hell of our own making.

I think if it hadn’t been dubbed for showing in the US, it might not have been so well attended. If Americans have to read sub-titles, they generally don’t attend foreign movies, unless there is something really shocking or there is a lot of sex involved.

I’ve always ranked “Das Boot” as one of the best war films ever; and you’re right, had it not been dubbed in its US release, very few would’ve seen it at all - there’s only a small niche market for subtitled/foreign films.
