International agreement reached on polar bear protection

The first ever circumpolar action plan to protect polar bears was released yesterday during the Polar Bear Range States meeting in Ilulissat, Greenland. The five polar bear range states - Canada, Kingdom of Denmark (Greenland), Norway, Russia, and the United States - have committed to a 10-year plan that aims to secure the long-term survival of polar bears in the wild.

The plan identifies seven key threats to the health and diversity of polar subpopulations across the Arctic, and includes climate change as the number one threat to the species’ survival.
