That’s the problem though and why your analogy is a bad one. There is a very clear set of criteria for what makes someone a Catholic. It’s the one laid out by the Church. Other people who call themselves Catholics can always be adjudicated by those standards.
We have an issue about what constitutes membership in the anti-jihadist movement or position that has no such authoritative definition. That’s why the term can be co-opted by the loudest and shriekiest voices, and has been.
At this point this is really just an argument about what words we all use, nothing more, as we’re all of us on the same page about all the issues.
