I’m on the outside looking in on this, but aren’t most Israelis, living in Israel descended from Ashkenazis? They carry European (including Russian) culture and DNA along with Jewish faith and history. In my mind, the dufus on some college campus indulging in self pity about his ancestors’ treatment of American Indians, the hollywood dufus apologizing to the Japanese for Hiroshima, and a third dufus blaming Israel for Hamas’s hatred - they appear to be cut from similar cloth. Psychologically, the same trustafarian self-loathing thing is happening in all 3 cases.
