Apparently back then party tricks were possible with a 300 baud acoustic modem where people could whistle in such a way that the modem thought it was getting some input.

I never saw this in action, so it could have been an urban legend of that time.

They were whistling into pay phones in the dorms at Cal Tech in 1975, for free long-distance phone calls. Those used to be expensive.
