Whether the instigators are anti-fascists (unlikely, since unlike black bloc, tend to be reactive) or white supremacists, it doesn’t excuse police reactions like covering up their badge numbers or macing indiscriminately (catching older people and 10 year old kids).

That is true, especially in my hometown which had the “police riot” in 1968 during the Democratic convention. But I haven’t heard that the Chicago police engaged in this type of activity during the protests tonight. In any case, if voters fear instability and violence, they may ignore police transgressions. That is why it is important to find the instigators quickly.
