Writing about the battle, Robert Leckie found it fitting that those canister shots fired by Indiana gunners repulsed the troops of the Yankee-hating Daniel Harvey Hill, who had once written a math problem that began “At Buena Vista, two Indiana volunteers ran away from the battle.” As an aside, its worth noting that Leckie’s experience as a Marine served him in good stead writing about the ambush of the Union troops in the West Wood. His portrayal is so vivid because he himself had fought off ambushes in the Pacific. Before he wrote about it, he lived it.
