The odd thing is that whenever I’ve been asked to prove my Jewishness, I’ve never been asked if I believe in God. Usually, all I do is produce my mother’s orthodox ketubah (marriage contract).
My mother was no practicing Jew either, and she got married under communism, so even if she had been, her marriage would have been secular as religion was outlawed in my home country. It was a pure coincidence that her father, atheist but of Jewish descent, married her mother, also atheist, but from a mostly Jewish town.
