I’d say it’s the behavior that that attitude inspires, really, more than just the attitude.

I do kind of feel that even when I was young, we were kind of being promised that our resources would never run out. I think a lot of people are kind of just annoyed and unwilling to face the fact that we can’t just step on an automatic treadmill of scientific and technological advancement that will carry us to better and better lifestyles.

We can’t do anything that isn’t sustainable. That’s the reality. We have to stop being wasteful idiots. That doesn’t mean quality of life has to decline, but it does mean we have to do hard, hard work on changing things.

Both among my generation— who seem just as materialistic and consumed by materialism as the previous generations, despite knowing the costs and the risks— and the older generations, there seems to be a great inertia against performing this work.
