I’m still wondering what the deal was with what looked like a pair of shoes on the pavement right next to the open passenger side door of their car.

I haven’t looked at the video. But if it was a well-prepared attack they might have worn shoes and then dropped them before entering the car to reduce evidence traces - especially if they might have stepped in blood, glass, or something else that could be easily connected to the attack site.
(Just thinking aloud here for the most part, but part of the logistics of such an operation is minimizing leads in getting traced.)
