My favorite line, from my mother’s parents, of blessed memory.

I ask them, how they managed to stay together for as long as they did:

“Well,” Pa said, “I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of leaving.”

Ma said, “And I wouldn’t dare inflict him on another woman.”

They loved each other through the Great Depression (children of immigrants, both, growing up in coal country), WWII (where he went overseas and lost his brother, she lost her brother, too), Vietnam (lost their oldest son there), until she died of cancer in 1986. He passed in ‘99 or thereabouts, and wept for her every day of his life. No one I knew fought or loved like they did.
