I don’t know what the criteria for getting a medal in an armed life or death situation is, but it seems to me that this objection is largely based on him being a veteran.

Partly but mostly because he hadn’t broken any laws, threatened anyone in any way, and ended up dead with 8 bullets in him in a costco parking lot.
