Even when I was more “on that side” for lack of a better term, I was never comfortable with holding up a fictional novel as an example of reality. It’s like looking for historical facts in a Dan Brown novel. There’s a few facts sprinkled onto a whole lot of fantasy, and more often than not, bullshit.

But when you write thrillers, you are allowed. I mean, I’m tinkering with an outline for a novel right now that involves djinns from Texas doing freelance specials ops in Iraq. Texas, Iraq, and a lot of other stuff in the story all exist. Djinni, on the other hand…
