Honestly? I think most of those in the party who aren’t closet racists themselves are convinced that racism is “dead” or has been rendered impotent enough that we can act as though there’s no more work to do.

I was going to add to this. By saying that conservatives have a tin ear on racism I’m not saying “all conservatives are racist.” It’s just that a vast majority of them have a tin ear on racial issues, a lack of empathy perhaps, or simply having race issues fly right over their heads. The states rights meme being the biggest since it was in fact the main cause of the Civil War. That’s when the “states rights” meme began and yes, it was the Democrats of the south who were later known as Dixiecrats that made this rallying call and later went on to either get things right or move on to the Republican Party.
