re: #371 oaktree

Hmm. Speaking of guns I can get another opinion!

My brother has 80 acres of land in western NY state. Part of a farm that was split up and sold off. He has 2-3 fields and also the former woodlot (with still intact hardwoods including some very nice old oak trees*.)

He plans to house build there eventually. He is also going to need a varmit rifle since he will be keeping chickens and possibly some other small livestock. Said rifle will need to deal with stuff up to coyote size. Any suggestions on caliber/type of weapon he should look for?

You can go two ways with this. My dad has a semi-automatic .22 Long Rifle for small critters like rabbits. Larger pests, he rocks the .30-06 (okay, maybe just a tad bit of overkill) in a bolt-action rifle. It more depends on how many animals he’s anticipating having to shoot at once (larger numbers favor a faster action) and picking the right cartridge for range and size of animal.
