I strongly suggest watching or reading: Call the Midwife.

It depicts life in the East End of London after WWII and at the beginning of their National Health care System. The Memoir of midwife, Jenny Worth. It continues thru the 60’s.

for a bit of history: before the Pill, the midwives assisted in average 95 births a month. after the Pill — 5.
