I agree. One of my employees served in his squadron during WW2. As far as everybody was concerned, Lt. Bush was just some guy from Connecticut. My guy was a turret gunner in an Avenger. Never fired his gun outside of training and testing. He said the worst part about the war was the landing. They flew off of a little carrier, not one of those 800 foot Essex carriers, and putting a airplane on that little deck was terrifying.
