Please mention that our failure to contain Iran came precisely because we invaded Iraq, whose previous unconventional arms programs were funded by the West. Our inability to contain Iran seems to have come from our desire to contain an utterly neutered Iraq.

Well, Iran would have loved to invade Iraq, depose Saddam and install a puppet government with loyalty to Iran but they lacked they military might to accomplish that. We did it for them.
