re: #370 Targetpractice

Not only that, Crowder’s also boasting about how he’s got cars that are over a decade old. In other words, he’s boasting that he’s no doubt spending more in maintenance and fuel than he would with a newer vehicle. What’s he going to do when he’s $2,000 short of the cost of that new car and then his Explorer’s transmission explodes?

I have a decade old Subaru that just sucked up about $4,000 in repairs. Timing belt, brake work, and getting a door replaced due to a massive dent. The last in part because letting the dent rust would be stupid with the expectation of using the car for at least another year or two.

But I have non-standard usage since I have a walking commute. Car is used for weekend jaunts and the various driving vacations in the eastern part of the US. From a straight monetary standpoint I’d probably be better off dumping the car entirely and just use ZipCar or something like that given insurance and parking fees. But having the vehicle available and close saves time and the effort it would take dealing with a car service a couple of times a week. In addition to having a car model that I know can handle snow conditions.
