I refer to the broad brush of suicide-as-cowardice which is so common and which many prefer to fall back upon in lieu of a more considered, if uncomfortable approach to the subject. I hear it so often, more in the tone of questions that follow the news (i.e. ‘did he have a wife?’ or ‘but didn’t he have children?’) that amounts to judgement of the individual. It’s moralism dressed up as concern. And it bugs me. Small town gossip over non-celebs is bad enough. When then same tone is used in an international conversation I can’t help but comment.
