You probably know that there are “Christian academies” all over the South to this day that were founded for exactly the reason you name. They really only finally began to integrate in anything but token numbers for perhaps the only thing in the white South that trumps racism: winning football games.

Between this and many areas drawing their school districting lines strictly along racial boundaries (like having separate city and county/parish districts), and “voucher” based schools, de facto segregation is still alive and well in much of white South.
