It’s amazing to me to see the party that prided itself on personal responsibility and decried what it saw as a culture of victimhood now incessantly whining about being victims, and failing to take responsibility for its electoral losses (and bad decisions). What the hell is happening to the right?

They lost a big election. I don’t think that’s all of it, but that’s part of it.

Also, the culture of victimhood is real, and extraordinarily tempting to most people, regardless of their political leanings. I mean, like crack. The rush of self-righteousness is hard to beat.

Some of that, I think, is also rooted in a weird perversion of American culture. We value success. What does it mean if times are hard? That you’ve messed up? Comes the salve—it’s not your fault, ‘they’ are favoring and helping white/black/male/female/immigrant/native…you get it…competitors take ‘your’ stuff. The Puritans would have hit us upside the head and told us to stop whinging and go cut down a forest.
