What I want to know is why a civilian would really need a tactical weapon like the AR-15? I can undertand a hunting rifle, or even a handgun for protection, if necessary. But a semi-automatic weapon which can easily be modified by the owner?

It’s basically the same weapon as the M-16 used by the US military, as well as other militaries world-wide. There are between 2.5-3.7 AR-15s owned by civilians in it various configurations.

No it’s not. It’s much closer to a Mini-14 than an M-16 in every way that counts. It just looks like an M-16.
