I’m familiar with the mugged by reality phrase and while I kinda understand where Kristol was coming from, I don’t think it’s entirely true. I certainly faced a lot of disillusionment in my political views after Kerry lost. I didn’t become a conservative because of that though. I did become more practical in how I viewed the world but my same basic philosophy is the same as it was when I was an idealistic high school kid.
