They actually asked them direct, detailed questions about their policies and the implications thereof. On the tax issue in particular this is kryptonite for the Republicans, and they know it.
The media narrative of the past three days has been pretty brutal for them IMO. You simply can’t have people pointing out that your la-la-land tax plan blows a $2 trillion hole in the budget. That’s the kind of number even a low-information voter takes note of.
Ah, good point. The first two debates were hours long puff pieces like “What’s your favorite Bible verse?” or “What would you Secret Service codename be?” Not only asking them serious questions, but calling them on their own bullshit, is strictly verboten.
