It actually has a good record of working for us in past wars. Exhibits A, B and C, Germany, Italy and Japan.

They weren’t Afghanistan. There was a functioning industrialized infrastructure going on there, and an almost entirely non-tribe-based society. They’d been prosperous nation-states before, in a global economic and diplomatic network with the Allies, and wanted to get back there.

Call me a cynic.
