I have to assume either the evidence against him is that damning that a dishonorable discharge would have been considered insufficient or that the Army feels that a court martial is called for in order to maintain the sense that such matters will be treated seriously.

Speaking as someone who knows more about the culture of the military than is comfortable at times, I’d say that Bergdahl fucked up too much to ignore and too little to get a medal.
