On the one hand, yes, but then you get those irritating exceptions (e.g. the Iranian revolutionaries of 1979 - about as far from “liberal” as you can get).

Who would be the “revolutionaries” and who would be the “conservatives” if you had a liberal, open, secular society with a subgroup agitating to turn it into a totalitarian theocracy?

That’s why I think a more detailed axis is needed, though I’m not sure how best to define it (after all, the Stalinists were economically left but very “right” when it came to sexual freedom, individual liberties, etc)
