The Obama administration brought this up but the right claimed it was an attack on veterans because the report noted correctly I might add that the far right goes after veterans.

IIRC, the RWNJ extremism report that caused that fuss was actually mostly (or even entirely) compiled in the W Bush years, and was published early in Obama’s term.

Republicans and the RW noise machine went nuts because they don’t want their cadres of future brown shirts to be disrupted.
