I think Obama was hoping it would resolve some things. He wanted this to be a teaching moment, but for whom, he did not specify. Was it Gates? One can rule that out since of everyone involved, Gates seems not to have learned a thing except that screaming racism garners attention. Was it for Obama, himself, probably not. He is too narcissistic to be introspective when it comes to his own behavior. So, that leaves Crowley. The guy whom Gates stated he’d run through sensitivity training.

Also, Obama wanted to turn the heat off the entire situation because it has opened a can of worms for him politically.

Actually now that I think about it, the only decent way of resolving this would’ve been for Gates to invite Crowley to Gates’ place. With little fanfare and certainly without the Won’s participation. That would have been a teaching moment.
