I hate to sound crass here but do you think it could possibly be early signs of dementia? The man is seventy five. I’m just really confused by his actions. Honestly, he’s lost me big time by making a lot of his gripes about closed primaries. I’m sympathetic on some of the ideological stuff but the whole fixation over open primaries rubs me the wrong way. He was seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination and honestly it to me was incredibly two faced of him to complain about closed primaries while he himself benefited from caucuses.

I honestly don’t know. It could be he is beholden to his conviction he would win (something like the FOX News bubble except on the left), possible dementia, or he is not as much a leader as he would like to think (he is being manipulated, well-meaning but mislead).

I am not a fan of open primaries. (I never participated in a caucus before I moved here, I can see both benefits and detriments to the model.) Parties are private clubs; they do not have to let just anyone pick their candidates. (This goes for the GOP too; there is no reason so-called independents or Democrats should be picking their candidates.)
