re: #390 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
It used to be more of a thing for the drivers themselves, a chance to show off their skills.
My ex has a guide to carriage driving from the 1880, it covers everything from seating & greeting etiquette through to the proper way to take turns and park a carriage, etc.
I can imagine that parallel parking was a real bitch.
When my sister used to go to *work* horse shows part of the competitions were 2-, 4- and I even 8-horse hitch. Less I think about being able to maneuver the wagon about as compared to how well matched and behaved the teams were. And as anyone who has seen Budweiser commercials knows a well-matched and trained team of Clydesdales are a wonder to watch.
