The death toll from a major New Madrid earthquake would be horrendous. Building codes like in CA and Japan really do save many lives in earthquake.

Ca, among others, has made great progress in making structures much more earthquake resistant. It’s tombstone progress; people had to die before those enhanced building codes and requirements were finally pushed through. The Sylmar quake was, IIRC, what did it.
