I’d say that it helped that both the state GOP and republican voters abandoned the republican in the race. He had no chance of winning, much like Meek in Florida, and it was obvious that Lieberman would be a lot better than Lamont, and that supporting the republican would in the end mean that Lamont got elected.

Since the democrats are going to lose a lot of seats in the Senate, they should jettison Meek. He has no chance of winning, and for democrats, Crist would be a lot better, even if he ends up caucusing with the republicans, just as Lieberman caucuses with the democrats.
