She thinks the police are just trying to keep the protesters safe by not letting it develop into a true riot. I wish I could find words to explain it to her.

You might point out to her that firing rubber bullets into a crowd that was peacefully demonstrating does not protect them from turning violence.

I am doing my small part to try and push back from the spread of misinformation on Twitter by trying to point out bad sources (like Anonymous) and direct a friend to a better source (like Antonio French). That …mostly got the “but it’s accurate” response. Sigh.
