If you’re looking for penance, read Atul Gawande’s book “Better”, about improving health care— not from primarily a legislative angle, either.

Of course, it’s not much of a penance, since it’s a great book, but I don’t think saying something and then immediately acknowledging you were mistaken is a very terrible offense.
