I wouldn’t necessarily call this a case of vigilantism. If there’s an emotional affect involved (caught in the act and immediately beat to death, which wouldn’t do in a non-immediate situation), it’s not vigilantism. It would be vigilantism if he found out some time later, made plans, etc.

I think the term “Act of passion” or some such was often used. That term would come up when a husband came home and found his wife in bed with someone else and he killed or seriously injured the man or both man and wife.
