I’m not sure the rift would last beyond a single election. It’s not like the revolt of the Dixiecrats. Trump doesn’t represent any policy position or ideology that any other GOP candidate rejects. In fact it’s hard to say what his actual positions are, apart from the know-noting position on immigration and the kneejerk ‘spend more on defense!’ position they all have.

I also think Bartlett’s kidding himself about reasonable Republicans reclaiming the GOP.

IMO, any such rift would only become a big deal if the GOP establishment is unable to keep the base under control.
