Apparently they’re trying to shift gears from Nixonian “total denial” to Reaganesque “he was totally in the dark about everything!”

We’re getting to that point in Iran-Contra where the conclusions were either that the man is a criminal or an idiot. That he either knowingly took part in what happened and is thus criminally liable…or he’s such a fucking idiot that he had no control over anything and thus totally in the dark about what was going on around him.

Neither of those are good looks, especially when you’re gearing up for a reelection run.
