Young “Blues Boy” King, 1956. Yeah, I used to boogie to this. Rhythm and Blues was just about all I listened to as a teen; my musical tastes were definitely not “white bread” at all. I can’t even repeat what my dad said when I listened to the radio, but it was racist as hell when he caught me. Only Black stations played the music I loved back then.

Living in central Florida in the late 1950’s and 1960’s we listened to “John R” out of 50,000 Watt WLAC in Nashville, TN.
As you may know, John R - like Hoss Allen - were white men who sounded black, and broadcast over the clear channel Life and Casualty Insurance owned radio station.
Here’s John R ending an interview with Percy Sledge and then selling baby chicks.
Chips Moman named his publishing company, “Baby Chicks” because of this commercial.
John R was a nice guy.
