Actually, the lawyer for the lady who scalded herself with McDonald’s coffee developed evidence that the coffee was boiling hot, and that many other customers had suffered from similar injuries. The jury was punishing McDonald’s for failing to correct a pre-existing hazard the company had known about for a long, long time.
