I think it’s because Dukakis is such a little guy but I was just a newborn during that campaign so I really can’t speculate too much. He looked weird in it but as I’ve pointed out, Dukakis was a Korean War veteran. Now I don’t know if he saw combat or not but he did serve his country in uniform during that conflict unlike the man in charge of the campaign that put him down, some guy named Roger, he runs some network that has the name of a canine. Weasel News? Maybe it will come to me.

In the pre-Clinton era military service of some sort was a de facto prerequisite for a presidential candidacy. So everyone knew Dukakis was a vet going into that. The Willie Horton thing, first used by Gore in the primary, really hurt him.

The financial woes that were worsening here in MA, though not wholly his fault, didn’t help either. It was bad, but nothing compared to what’s going on in Christie or Jindal’s states now, and WI could become a real mess between now and November 16 too. I don’t think sitting governors are the unicorns they are cracked up to be, frankly. So much can go wrong in a state….
