Although Byrd was former KKK and a former Kleagle unlike Thurmond and Helms, he showed genuine regret for his past in a way that GOP icons like Helms and Thurmond never did. It’s true. Byrd for much of his early career was a racist asshole. But it’s also true that Byrd expressed regret for his past in a way that few supporters of segregation did.
