Holocaust Fund in Scam

Seventeen people were charged with engaging in a $42.5 million scam that defrauded New York-based programs designed to help Holocaust survivors.

The charges, brought by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara Tuesday, allege that the defendants processed thousands of fraudulent applications for the payouts, oftentimes by submitting birth records of people who weren’t eligible. According to prosecutors, several of the aid recipients were born after World War II.

“We will bring to justice all those who would callously line their own pockets by looting a lifeline for Holocaust survivors,” said Mr. Bharara at an afternoon press conference.

The alleged fraud, which authorities say ran for 16 years, was discovered within the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, a not-for-profit organization that provides assistance and administers reparation payments to victims of Nazi persecution.
