I imagine one’s answer to this would depend on their point of view. I have friends from Venezuela (who fled because of Chavez) and they’ll accept no answer other than he rigs elections and uses violence against his opponents.

I’m sure a Chavez supporter would say it’s because he’s for the people and against American imperialism.

My question is how the impoverished people of Venezuela feel compelled or a need to re-elect Chavez. How that impoverished base is maintained could delve into a conspiracy theory which would be as much as saying the vote count was fraudulent. The fact is that it may be real. The winners in the end are both the Chavistas and the capitalists that rely on a cheap labor/impoverished class. How much different is this from China, etc? We cry about Chavez yet readily blow off the far greater injustices of China as we shop in the local Apple store.
