PC games really haven’t gone anywhere, and a lot of great PC games have system requirements low enough that you really don’t need a gaming rig for them.

I don’t like arcade or graphic based PC games. I miss the good old days of Infocom style text adventures like the Zork series or Suspended.

I cut my IT teeth on programming text adventures. That’s how I got involved in programming. I had a Vic20, was so impressed with a game that could let me input text and it responded to my desires, that I had to learn how to do it myself.

My first text adventure, written for the Vic20 was called “Midway” and you had one hour to find a bomb that was fixing to blow up one of the major attractions on the carnival midway. It was written in Commodore Basic and fit in 3.5k.

The second text adventure I wrote was called “Encounter” and it was a encounter with a UFO adventure, written for the C64. If you look hard enough, you can still find a rom image of it on some archival sites.

If you have a C64 emulator, find it and enjoy.
