Apropos of nothing other than it was another B&W T-shirt design, I spotted a young woman in KFC a couple of days ago wearing a black top with the following word in ginormous letters across the front:

ACNE

Chinese clothing designers have this curious habit of splashing random English words as some kind of fashion statement. I am sure they give little thought as to meaning. My first year teaching here I had to gently tell a freshman girl that having the phrase “I am your whore” on her left breast pocket was perhaps not the kind of sentiment she wanted to advertise.

Since many American companies have their T-shirts printed in China, I also see many T-shirts advertising obscure firms in KC, Iowa City and other cities. My friend bought one yesterday that says “Continual pleasure/National Refrigeration Service/North every-day.”
